When the Dutch settlers sailed around the coastline in 1652, they discovered the lush forested valley of Hout Bay.  They named the bay ‘hout’ a Dutch term for ‘wood’.  The valley of Hout Bay subsequently grew into a vibrant fishing harbour and a cosmopolitan sea-side village whilst retaining its community allure.

Located 20kms from Cape Town, Hout Bay is affectionately known as ‘the Republic’ by the locals.  The picturesque village is a colourful playground offering something for everyone, any day of the week.

These are our Top 10 local picks:

  • Massimo’s

One of the local’s most loved restaurants offering authentic Italian cuisine.  Massimos is located at the Oakhurst Farm Centre and is a family-run restaurant.  Massimo is from Piemonte in Northern Italy and Tracy from Liverpool. They both fell in love with Cape Town and decided to bring their passion for food here.  With the full range of pizza and pasta on offer, they include options for Vegans and banting.  We love them even more because they use free-range and hormone-free products, responsibly sourced fish and biodegradable packaging products.

  • Clay Café

This is a wonderful family space and outing.  A place to eat, but also a place to create.  Choose from a selection of unfired bisque (already made pottery), colourful paints and brushes to create your unique and functional piece.  Then spend a leisurely few hours creating your masterpiece while enjoying a farm-style breakfast or lunch.

  • Hout Bay Vineyards

One of Hout Bay’s best kept secrets, this boutique winery is easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it.  The winery started off with ‘bubbly’ in 2003 and now they produce a range of reds, a crispy sauvignon blanc, a delicate, dry blush and a vintage port.  Other products include a delectable port, wine farm honey and cold pressed olive oil.  Wine lovers can book a private tasting with owners Cathy and Peter or join them for a picnic on the lawn when they have an Open Day.

  • Tea Bag shop

The T Bag shop was rated the #1 attraction in Hout Bay on Trip Advisor in 2016.  And it’s not a tea shop at all.  It’s a retail shop displaying a range of unique handmade products using recycled tea bags as works of art.  This is an ingenious community initiative that employs disadvantaged women and gives them the necessary skills needed to create the products that they sell- all of which are made from or incorporate dried out tea bags. Worthy of a visit the company has wonderful stories to share.  Support them by purchasing a product or two.

  • Fish on the Rocks

This fish and chips shop characterises the charm of the Hout Bay fishing village.  Set in the working harbour, the wharf and a Naval heritage site, Fish on the Rocks serves up delicious fish and chips the original way.  Steeped in history the building used to be a fisherman supply store in 1951.

This unique market is housed in a disused fish factory and is one of the Cape’s most popular.  With over 100 stalls it is the ultimate destination for the whole family, especially if you like food, music and shopping for unique treasures.  With live entertainment, food of all kinds, play areas and various arts, crafts and curios to buy, the Bay Harbour Market is the place to be on weekends.
