Chapman’s Peak, fondly also known as Chappies, is undoubtedly one of the most popular attractions in Cape Town. Famous for it’s breathtaking vistas over the Atlantic coastline and 114 dramatic curves, this is one of the world’s most scenic drives. A 9km route that hugs the Karbonkelberg mountain range, Chapman’s Peak drive connects Noordhoek and Hout Bay.
Now a new landmark luxury residential development, Sacha, will be located at the foothill of this magnificent natural wonder. We explore the history of Chapman’s Peak and its impressive coastal road.
Chapman’s Peak a national treasure
Chappies wasn’t named after a queen or brave explorer, but after a lowly Captain’s mate, John Chapman. In 1907 an English ship called ‘Consent’, was stranded in the waters of Hout Bay. The Captain sent John Chapman to row to shore in the hope of securing supplies. The ship’s pilot recorded the bay as ‘Chapman’s Chaunce’ (chance) and the name remained as such.
Chapman’s Peak Drive – a remarkable engineering feat
The brainchild of Sir Frederic de Waal, the first administrator of the Cape Province, work on the route began in 1915. His vision was to build a high-level road to connect Hout Bay with Noordhoek. After surveying the proposed route, Engineers were daunted by the scope and technicality of the project. The cliffs and ravines were extremely steep and unstable. It was clear that this expedition would be expensive. De Waal stood firm and the road took 7 years to construct at a cost of ₤20 000. On 6 May 1922 the road was opened by the Governor of the Union of South Africa, His Royal Highness Prince Arthur of Connaught.
Mother Nature forces road closure
The precarious nature of the drive means it remains susceptible to natural occurrences. In January 2000 the drive was closed due to rock falls. Due to public pressure, the City commissioned an astounding feat of engineering to restore the drive to its former glory. Rock fall mitigating measures involve catch fences and a canopy structure. A naturally-cut half tunnel also keeps visitors safe from potential rock falls.
During this reconstruction Chappies was closed for three years. It re-opened as a Toll Road in December 2003. It remains an official tourist attraction for international and national visitors to Cape Town. The drive is monitored by an integrated traffic & Incident management system, including weather monitoring, CCTV cameras and variable message signs. Any adverse or high-risk weather situations calls for immediate road closure.
